Gizmo Glass

  • Wineglass visibly fills, empties, or refills on command. Or, the magician can repeatedly drink from the glass yet it refills in the blink of an eye. Made in Germany. Rapping Hand

  • Rapping Hand | J. Bartl, Hamburg, ca. 1930

    A beautifully painted composition hand that mysteriously taps out answers to questions—once for “yes,” twice for “no.” It rests isolated on a sheet of glass during performance, heightening the effect. Measures 8 ½” in length. The wrist bears the penciled name “Ducrot” and is stamped “Germany.” Light rubbing on the palm side, otherwise in near fine condition. From the collection of Edwin A. Dawes.

    This piece was likely manufactured for export by Bartl and sent to legendary New York dealer Frank Ducrot, who ran the Hornmann Magic Co. in Manhattan.

    Based upon Bob Kline’s effect Spirit Time. A clock is set to any time while the magician's back is turned, yet he knows the time instantly.

Davenports Hole in One

  • Penetra-Spheres | Jack Hughes, Davenports, ca.?

    An extremely rare eight ball version, most have 5.

    Invented around 1937 by Jack Hughes, Penetra-Spheres followed his Coins in Glass effect. Licensed by Abbott’s, it debuted in the U.S. in 1947 as Hole in One, the name most commonly known today.

    A spectator freely selects and marks a ball. The small glass is covered by the larger glass, sealing it completely. The remaining balls are arranged around the glasses. The magician covers the setup with a cloth, then immediately hands the tray to the spectator.

    With a flourish, the magician pretends to extract the chosen ball invisibly, tossing it through the cloth and into the sealed glass. When the cloth is removed, the selected ball is inside! This baffling effect can be repeated instantly.

Bill Paul Fraidy Cat Rabbit

    Created by Canadian magician Bill Paul and first marketed around 1950 from Gene Gordon’s Magic Shop in Buffalo, New York. It’s said that Bill Paul personally built at least 4,000 Fraidy Cat Rabbits. Very good condition, includes original Bill Paul instructions

U.F. Grant Rising Card Box

    Well-constructed and nicely decorated version of this trick originated by Clint Reidel. 5 1/2” wide. Very good condition. No instructions.

Karpinski Die Box

    A die is placed into a double-compartment box. When the die is shown to have vanished, both front and top doors are opened, the back is opened, and the two end panels are lifted out. This leaves a skeleton framework of a box which may be shown from all sides.

Cabinet of Foo

    A small cabinet on a low stand is shown empty; after its doors have been closed, a substantial production is made from within. Measures approx. 17 x 12 x 10”. Very good condition overall with some visible signs of use and age.

Zig-Zag Can

    Any soda can is placed inside an attractive wood box. A solid blade is inserted through one side of the box and out the opposite side. This is repeated with a second blade. Now the center section of the box is pushed to the side creating the class zig-zag effect.

Mirror Penetration

  • Japanese Mirror Penetration | Howard Schwarzman, 1985

    Probably the most sought after effect from Howard Schwarzman’s limited edition line of magic back in the 1980’s. Show a beautifully decorated mirror in a stand. The mirror can be removed from the stand and show all around. A sponge ball or silk held against the mirror “sticks” to the glass and then slowly penetrates through. Mirror measures 16″ x 18″.

    Includes gimmicked framed mirror, stand, carrying case, and original instructions.

Dove Through Glass

Japanese Production Box

    A simple rectangular box without a lid and a removable bottom. The bottom has a hole in the center to facility its removal from the rest of the box. The box is shown empty by showing it from all sides as well as removing the bottom. The bottom is replaced and silks appear inside.

Hippity Hop Rabbits

    B.C. Magic Mfg. Co. – a higher-end magic manufacturing company started c. 1977 by Dr. Armand Brodeur and Mr. Robert Chaney.  They began by leasing some space from the original Rings ‘n’ Things on Helen Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

    All wood, high quality construction with bright colors and brushed bronze covering for tubes. A simple and reliable mechanism without magnets. A rare find.

Ad-Infinitum/Imagino

  • Ad-Infinitum | Robert Harbin, ca. ?

    Magician shows two square tubes, obviously and actually empty, and places them on a tray. Then, with some inconsequential and typically Harbin Comedy Patter, the wizard produces a silk from one tube and deposits it in the other. This is repeated ad-infinitum.

    Finally the patter intimates that magic is really a matter of imagination and to prove this, the magician shows that the first tube never contained any silks, and that there were certainly none put into the second! No trace of silks is left at all! Entirely self-contained - no skill or sleigh of hand needed.

Production Birdcage

    Described by Prof. Hoffmann in his Modern Magic (pages 311 and 312) over a hundred years ago.

    Handcrafted in Brass, and plated in a silver finish. 

    In its collapsed state the cage occupies a space of less than 5" square and 2 ½ inch in height.  When produced each cage is about 5" square and 6" high, standing rigid on its base.  Tarnishing and scratches from use but in excellent working condition.

Rice Bowls

    A unique twist on the classic effect! After the rice doubles, one bowl produces a stream of colorful ribbon, followed by a large bouquet of flowers.

    P&L hallmark. Some wear with age, small dent on one bowl (doesn’t affect performance).

    A rare P&L piece by Herman Hanson—Thurston’s stage manager and later Max Holden’s Boston shop manager.

Blok-Kord

    The magician displays a wooden block and a piece of rope. Both are completely ungimmicked and fully examinable. The magician feeds the rope through the block and then through once again for secure attachment. Suddenly the magician pulls on the ends of the rope and the rope penetrates right through the block. Original block, cord, and instructions.

Blue Phantom

    Among a stack of wooden checkers, resting on a tiered wooden base and covered by a metal tube, the blue checker mysteriously changes its position between top, middle, and bottom. Approximately 17” tall. Unknown maker. A nice example in good condition. No instructions.

Block Off Rod

    A solid block, secured in a wooden stock by a chrome rod and

    substantial locked padlocks. The whole of the apparatus can be passed out in this condition for the most thorough and rigid examination and it is clearly demonstrated that it is impossible to remove the block without first removing the padlocks and bar... yet... in your hands the block seems to melt right through the rod. Excellent condition, original locks replaced with new (note: any locks can be used).

Gravity Box

Spirit Light

  • Spirit Light | Syl Reilly, ca. 1940-1950s

    Invented by Syl Reilly in the early 1940's. A small board with vintage pushbutton, battery, light bulb and wiring.

    The magician can secretly control light operation while resting the board on his/her palm, with no fingers near the pushbutton. Self-contained. May be given to spectator for inspection afterwards. Operating the push button is the only way the spectator will be able to make the light flash.  Even the closest examination will not reveal the method.

Milk Pitcher

Magic Rabbit Die Box

Domino Transposition

    Said to be from the estate of Charly Eperny (1897–1974), a magician, scholar, and collector (unconfirmed).

    Born in France, Eperny began performing at 17 and survived WWI. He adopted the stage name Chiang Fu while in Italy, creating a Chinese-themed magic show.

    Charly was known for his innovative acts, including color-changing ties and jackets. Post-WWII, he moved to Austria, where he continued contributing to magic through performances and influential writings.

English Die Box

  • This style of Die box with two doors in the front and two doors in the back, is often known as the English Die Box as it was popularized by Will Goldston  and others in England in the early 1900’s.

    This looks very similar to Die Boxes made by Davenport’s in the 1950’s and on but I am not 100% certain if it is made by them or not.

    A solid box with a nice heavy thud as the die moves from side to side until the final reveal at the end.

Bathing Beauty

  • Bathing Beauty | Abbott’s Magic Novelty Co., Ca

    This perennial small apparatus trick focuses on a banner showing a young woman at the seaside. The banner is rolled up and a piece of her costume is removed from the roll. Each time this is done, the banner is unrolled to show the picture of the woman has altered accordingly.

    When her final garment is removed from the rolled-up banner, the visual punch line is delivered: She is shown up to her neck in the ocean.

    This trick is the invention of British professional Fred Culpitt, who called it “The Seaside Poster.” This trick was in Culpitt's act not later than 1921.

    The trick was first marketed by the short-lived Blackstone Magic Company (without credit to Culpitt), and later by the Abbott's Magic Company.

The Lady Vanishes

Loyd Guinea Pig Box

  • Guinea Pig Box. Glendale: Loyd, ca. 1950. Hardwood cage holds a live guinea pig. The animal is removed from the cage and torn to pieces (or eaten), but the real animal is unharmed. 11 x 9 x 8 ½ ?. Finish worn, else good. Finely made.

Billiard Ball Stand

  • Billiard Ball Stand. Colon, Abbott’s Magic, ca. 1950. Mechanical stand facilitates the production of red billiard balls from mid-air. 17” tall. Some wear to paint. Overall, very good.

Devil’s Card Rise

  • Owen Magic Supreme. From ten cards, three are chosen. All ten cards are shuffled by a spectator and, by him, sealed into an envelope.

    The latter is placed in an open faced stand on the table, the envelope never leaving the sight of the spectators. One at a time the three selected cards arise out of the envelope.

    The latter is then removed, tossed to a spectator for opening.

    This done, it is found that only seven cards remain, the three selected ones having apparently really arisen up and out of the envelope.

    No sleight of hand is required either in the handling of the cards or the envelope.

    The exchange of the latter is accomplished so very, very effectively by the mechanical stand.

    It is somewhat similar to our Devil's Mail Box, but has the added rising feature.

    This is an effect which may be used in the parlor or on the stage. The apparatus is beautifully made and decorated and will be something you'll always be proud to own, display and work. Sold by Owen in 1959 for $27.50 (around $300 today).

Swirl-it-Box

  • Bob Kline. An open, empty cabinet suspended from a cord is spun rapidly. At the magician's command it visibly and instantly fills with silk handkerchiefs.

Vase of the Genii

  • Vase of the Genii. Colon: Abbott’s Magic, ca. 1945.

    Nickel-plated vase into which water is poured. A moment later, a mammoth production of dry paper coils and silk handkerchiefs is made from inside, followed by a bottle of liquor. A live rabbit is then produced from the coiled paper on the floor. Height 15”. Good condition.

Chiang Mai Block by Magic Wagon

  • The performer holds the ends of the cords that are threaded through the holes on both sides of the block, suspending the block above the table and openly placed into the cabinet with the ends of the cords protruding from each side of the cabinet.

    The front door is now closed to secure the block and the ends of the cords are taken by the performer, wrapped over the lid and tied in a knot.

    On the performer’s command, the cords visibly penetrate through the block and the cabinet, leaving the cords in the performer’s hands and the block in the cabinet!

    The cabinet, block and cords can all be inspected by a spectator.

    The cabinet is 5 inch high with a 4 inch square footprint. The block is 2 inch cubed.

    Exquisite craftsmanship, finished in the finest possible coating with hand polishing and sanding in between.

Crystal Dove Cote

  • Owen Magic Supreme. A white dove makes an instantaneous appearance within the confines of a crystal clear glass box. The impossible nature of this feat is difficult to comprehend. No outside loads, mirrors, body work or anything to hamper the magician; just sheer magic in breathtaking beauty.

    Owen offered this in two versions: An all lucite crystal cote or wood framed glass.

Thayer Change Bag

  • Thayer Change Bag, ca. 1920s. Plush bag attached to a finely turned wooden handle painted black, which can be used to switch, vanish, or produce objects. Excellent condition.

Die Through Hat

  • Die Through Hat. Circa 1900. Handsome model of this classic effect. A die in a wooden frame penetrates the top of a hat on which the frame rests. Well made from wood. Frame, and 4 ¼” cube. Die missing one spot, else very good.

Chinese Flame Clock

  • Manufactured by Milson With, ca. 1975. A candle is placed into a tall cabinet decorated with Asian characters. The magician cuts through the cabin and candle with two large blades. When the doors of the cabinet are opened, the center of the candle is missing. Fine condition. Inquire

Card Rise Box

  • From the Estate of Edwin A. Dawes. Card Rise Box. [Oldham: Michael Heriot, 1909]. Small wooden chest with brass handles finished in brown and green, into which a pack of cards (from which several have been chosen) is dropped. The box opens of its own accord minutes later, and the chosen pasteboards rise from within. With original key. 5 ½ x 4 x 5 ¼”. Refurbished to working condition in the 1970s and accompanied by a letter of provenance explaining the history of the prop and the repairs conducted. Inquire

    An etched glass vessel on a nickel-plated base is seen full of ink. Visibly, the black liquid becomes clear water with two goldfish swimming about inside. Based on the Klingl design.

Fantastic Frame

Sinbad’s Silk Casket

    Specially made with 4 inch die for J.B. Bobo

    Effect: A three inch die is shown and then placed in a hat or any suitable container.

    The glass lined casket is displayed and placed on a table. Performer now removes the die from the hat and places it in the casket.

    He takes a number of silks and puts them into the hat. Suddenly, the die vanishes from the casket and the casket is filled with silks. The silks have vanished from the hat and the die 1s found in their place. Fine condition.

Spider Web Card Illusion

  • Owen Magic Supreme. A large colorful spider rests in the center of its web on a stand. A selected card is vanished, the web given a spin and a small spot appears on the web. As the spot grows larger it moves to the center in the grasp of the spider. When the web stops, it proves to be the selected card. Startling and self contained.

Pagoda Mystery

  • Coffee, Milk, and Sugar Trick. European, ca. 1910. Cotton, silk, and confetti placed in the separate parts of a metal coffee service transform into hot coffee, sugar, and cream. Head Chopper

  • This beautifully Owen-built one-person illusion miracle lacks not one single perfect detail. This sensational, baffling, thrilling effect may be adapted to either serious or hilarious comedy situations. Place a potato, carrot, or cabbage in the head opening and cut in half with one thrust of the glistening blade.

    Now, do the same with a person's head, the knife passing through the neck and out below, yet the victim never feels it. All done completely surrounded.

Floating Ball

  • Owen Magic Supreme, Floating Sphere. The lid of a handsome chest slowly opens at the command of the performer. A silver ball gracefully rises from the chest and floats over the performer. The ball hovers in midair, soars high and low, and follows the performer as if in complete actord with his will. Finally the ball settles gracefully back into the chest held by an assistant and the lid closes by itself. A bewildering and beautiful effect to hold an audience spellbound. Some damage to the chest. Egyptian Water Box

  • Owen Magic Supreme Egyptian Water Box. Circa 1980. While I can’t verify this, I’ve read that only six were ever made by Owen. Based on the U.F. Grant effect, this version is slightly larger. Liquid poured into the chest may vanish or turn into wine. Inquire

  • Vintage UF Grant MAK Flaming Head Chest

    Nice prop from MAK Magic circa 1985. Overall in good condition, but does show signs of wear from use. See photos for more details related to paint chipping and one hinge that appears to be slightly bent, but is still intact and fully functional. All mirrors are intact without cracks or chips.

    Includes the chest, torch, and torch tube cover which is most often missing.

Davenports Wrist Chopper

  • You show your audience a guillotine which comprises a stand and a blade fixed into a wooden frame. The blade extends out either side of the frame so that it is always in view. There are two sets of holes in the frame. A large hole in the middle and a smaller set of three holes at the bottom. The frame can be opened and the blade assembly can be removed and shown to be quite normal. The blade is replaced into the frame and the frame closed. You now place your arm as far as it will go into the hole (or that of a spectator) and a carrot is placed in the centre of the three holes at the bottom. The blade is brought down and it is found that the carrot is cut in half, but the arm is completely unharmed. Excellent condition.

  • From the estate of Edwin A. Dawes. Talking Skull. Circa 1940. Papier-mâché skull mounted on a glass column atop a wooden plinth clicks its jaw in answer to questions, once for “yes” and twice for “no.” With unusual camera/flashbulb trigger mechanism in the base used to operate the device. Rabbit Through Glass

  • A rabbit, or any other small object, passes through a solid sheet of circular glass held in an elaborate wooden frame supported by scrollwork accents, on a turned wooden base. Modeled on the Thayer/Owen design, but the manufacturer is unknown— perhaps you can solve the mystery.
